Is beer the last alcoholic drink with a gender bias?

Outdated sexist marketing, fear of the ‘beer belly’, and negative perceptions about flavour are all contributing to British women spurning our national drink. These are the findings in a new report into female attitudes and behaviours towards the UK’s favourite alcoholic drink. The Gender Pint Gap report released by the women and beer group, Dea Latis is the first major piece of research about female attitudes towards beer in almost a decade. In a fast-moving consumer landscape that has seen a huge rise in the number of breweries and beer brands in the UK, the report reveals: Only 17% of women drink beer at least once a week (compared to 53% of men). Male oriented advertising is one of the three main barriers for over a quarter (27%) of women drinking beer – rising even higher for the 18-24 year-old female group to almost half …

The Red Lioness pours

Long-time supporter of Dea Latis, Cathy Price, has helped to launch a new Red Lion pub at Blackpool Tower where they have even named a guest cask ale after her, called The Red Lioness. Cathy, from Preston has regularly hit the headlines following her four year, 90,000 mile trip to visit every Red Lion pub in Britain – a grand total of 656 pubs. The Blackpool Tower’s Red Lion, found on the ground floor next to The Blackpool Tower Dungeon, is open daily from 10am. The newly refurbished Victorian tavern is decorated like a traditional pub of the era including period themed bar staff, beer tankards and wall decorations and locally brewed ale will be served on draft with a different beer available each month. Connecting generations of brewing talent

Jenn Merrick, former Beavertown head brewer, is brewing a collaborative beer with Heriot-Watt students at Pressure Drop Brewery in London on 23rd March. The idea came from the team at We Are Beer (London, Edinburgh & Bristol Craft Beer Festivals) who asked Pressure Drop Brewery facilitate a project to celebrate and profile women’s contribution to modern beer. Jenn Merrick of yet-to-be-built Earth Station Brewing will lead the project alongside the students and faculty at Heriot-Watt to make a beer that celebrates women in brewing; the craft, creativity and business expertise of women in the industry’s past, present and future. Sienna O’Rourke, Sales & Marketing Coordinator for Pressure Drop explained: “The We Are Beer guys behind the festival did some research and found that 35% of their attendees were female but they want to grow that to 50%. They felt that celebrating and profiling amazing female talent would be a great way to head towards this goal. Discrimination debate takes centre-stage

Industry experts will gather at the Manchester Beer Festival trade day to debate how the beer industry should combat discrimination. Taking place between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm on 24 January at Manchester Central, the panel discussion “Sexism is bad for business. What are we going to do about it?” aims to address the ongoing issues and challenges of sexism in the beer industry and determine what practical steps can be taken to address it. It follows hot on the heels of the festival’s decision to filter out beers with sexist names or discriminatory images and CAMRA publicly condemning sexism and discrimination in the industry.  Dea Latis stages tasting for women MPs

Beer and women group Dea Latis staged its third beer tasting in Parliament recently, treating a room full of women MPs and women working in the brewing and related industries to an evening of beer and food matching. The group also announced some initial fundings from its recent research into women’s behaviours and attitudes around beer. The event, organised jointly with the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and British Beer & Pub Association, was attended by around 70 guests. Beer Sommelier and Dea Latis founder Annabel Smith guided them through six beer and food pairings designed to showcase beers from Dea Latis corporate members, while co-founder Lisa Harlow revealed the research results. Leading north west brewer partners with beer and women group Manchester brewer and pub operator Joseph Holt Brewery has become a corporate member of beer and women group Dea Latis, committing funds, beer and other support to help the organisation achieve its mission of ‘bringing beer to women’. As a Dea Latis supporter, Joseph Holt Brewery will enjoy a number of benefits, including the chance to serve its Humdinger beer at a tasting in Westminster on 21 November. The 4.1% ABV speciality beer, flavoured with Mexican honey, will be tasted by women MPs and others at the event, held in partnership with the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and the British Beer & Pub Association. Beer and women group to stage tasting for female MPs

Beer and women group Dea Latis is joining forces with the Parliamentary Beer Group and British Beer & Pub Association to bring beer to women MPs at an event in Westminster next month. As well as tasting a selection of beers from across the country, matched to different foods by Beer Sommelier Annabel Smith, guests will meet some of the many women who work in brewing and related industries, from grain to glass. Dea Latis will also be revealing the results of recent research into women and beer at the event. New brewster at Brewster’s Brewery

Grantham-based micro brewery, Brewster’s Brewing Company have appointed Alice Batham as Technical Brewer straight from Nottingham University after completing an MSc in Brewing. Sara Barton said: “I’m really pleased to find a person of Alice’s calibre who will care as much about the brewing of beer as I do. Alice will be first tasked with hands on day to day brewing to familiarise her with our kit. The role will then grow to leading the team for recipe development and managing quality in the brewery” “Alice was uniquely placed to understand the demands of a small brewery like ours as she has been steeped in brewing from an early age at her family brewery Bathams in Dudley, Black Country. Alice is the sixth generation of her family brewers. Cheers from Burton with beer-loving women

In an event to mark the national celebrations for Beer Day Britain, Dea Latis, is holding a beer and food tasting evening for women at Marston’s Brewery Visitor’s Centre, DE14, on Thursday 15th June from 6.30pm. Guests will join in with the annual ‘Cheers for Beer’ at 7pm. Guests are set for a fascinating insight into women’s involvement in beer and brewing as well as sampling six different types of hand-held locally produced foods each matched with a different local beer. Dea Latis goes international

Annabel Smith, one of the founding members of Dea Latis, attended the 13th International Beer Strategies Conference in Barcelona on 10th May, to speak on the subject of how beer can appeal to a wider female audience. She was accompanied by Jenny Elliott, a fellow Beer Sommelier, and the Brand and Beer Champion at Molson Coors. The conference was attended by representatives from the entire spectrum of the brewing industry, and hosted speakers from Asahi Europe, Heineken, Diageo, Carlsberg, Brooklyn Brewery and Bieres de Chimay amongst others. The conference was held over two days and included a behind the scenes visit to the Estrella Damm brewery. Annabel said “The conference was really enlightening in terms of learning about future trends, current research and emerging brands in the beer industry. However, our ultimate mission was to communicate how the beer industry could engage a wider female audience by highlighting the challenges women face in choosing a beer as a drink of choice: namely misconceptions about health and calories, presentation and serve, brand positioning, and marketing”.
